Established during the reign of King Rama IV, the Crown Property Bureau Market (Tha Kai Market) is the ancient market with over 100 years of history. The former building was wooden structure built in non-traditional Thai style. Located in commercial area with a pier or “Tha” in Thai, the origin of the name “Tha Kai” derived from local poultry farmers as they raise ducks and chickens for a living so the area became known as the marketplace for eggs, literally translates as “Kai”. When the restructuring of provincial administration set forth, the name “Tha Keun Kai” was first adopted and later changed to “Tha Kai Subdistrict” same as the market.

Previously, the shifting of the locals’ spending habit led to the stagnation of the market. Due to such market condition, the Crown Property Bureau recognised the need to restore the state of the market as well as the riverside community to its glorious condition, while still maintaining the original structure. The restoration which included the development of the basic infrastructure, sanitary standard, and the restructuring of stall layout, improved the overall standard of the market. Further improvement varied from landscape work, the presentation of the classic “Skylab” three wheeled vehicles and street art painted by teachers and students from Rajabhat Rajanagarindra University, Chachoengsao Province. The design and decoration of the market was achieved through support and collaboration from Central Group.

There are 40 stalls in total selling fresh produces and ready-to-eat delicacy. For example, “Rarn Tom Neur Samoonprai”, the stall has been selling their legendary beef broth with herbs for 80 years. The third generation of “Rarn Jae Lek Kai Sab” specialising in boiled chicken where the highlight is the selection of chicken from three breeds served with tasty dipping sauce. Another gem of the market is “Rarn Mae Pramual Jao Kao Kraprow Jan Ded” which is famous for their pad kraprow, fried rice and noodles in gravy sauce that they have been serving for more than 30 years. For desserts, “Kao Niew Moon Mae Ubol” serves coconut sticky rice with kaya sauce, traditional Thai custard and steamed pandan layer cake. For drinks, “Rarn Café Yok Niew” has more than coffee drinks to offer and is proud to present their fresh homegrown sugar cane juice served without any added sugar.
